Mourning Embroidery Gothic Dove Black Velvet Framed Victorian Antique ? Vintage

This gracious old mourning artwork is of a white dove atop red roses, on a black ground, within a solid carved wood frame and behind glass. [DISCLAIMER: The age of this entire piece is up for debate: I am NOT an expert on antique embroidery, and have not removed the fabric from the frame. The piece has hallmarks of being Victorian, and the frame is a lovely carved wood that shows patina and wear commensurate with age. It could be 1890s, and it could be 1950s, I cannot say without a doubt, so please buy only if you're comfortable with the possibility going either way.] This is an absolutely unique and beautiful piece of art. The entire thing is some kind of yarn in a loop stitch that I'm unfamiliar with. It appears to be on black velvet, but as I mentioned, I have not opened the back to check. The back is papered over, and there is a corner peeled away, which reveals a bit of fabric edge held in by board. The frame is solid wood, not veneer, but the old stain is yellowed and peeling a bit. The picture inside is in excellent condition, and the embroidery yarn colors are vibrant and striking, especially the red of the roses against the black. It is a gorgeous memorial piece, or a lovely additional to a gothic home without being "over the top." The piece is pictured with a matching (though totally unrelated) ceramic vase, probably dating to the 1950s, which is available in my store. Thank you for supporting our small Montana business!
